ACCENTS & HOMETOWNS .
Tumblr media
001. despite basically living in massachusetts his whole life, having been born in and raised just outside of boston, ELIJAH DOES NOT SPEAK WITH A TYPICAL BOSTON ACCENT. even though he's moved to basically every part of the state, from lee to ashby to needham, and even as far east as provincetown and as far north as salisbury, he considers marblehead his hometown. when elijah and their siblings were still very young, their family would also take regular summer trips to new york and vermont to stay with extended family. none of the four kids stayed stagnant enough to really absorb one type of speaking and keep to it for their whole lives.
002. ORDER OF HOMETOWNS - born in boston but taken to their then-home in needham until elijah was about 2, moved to lee until he was about 5, moved to provincetown when he was 7, moved to ashby when he was 10, moved to salisbury when he was 12, and finally moved to marblehead when he was 14. (i also drew a map under the cut, the blue star is where to start following the purple arrows!)

REVIEW
One Perfect Dance by Jude Knight
A Twisted Upon a Regency Tale #2
Cinderella with a male dealing with evil stepbrothers and stepfather, working hard, and dealing with soot and askes is what this story is about.
 What I liked:
* The idea of switching the genders of the main characters
* The way the shoe was incorporated into the story
* The letter writing between Ash and Regina
* Ash: survivor, resilient, intelligent, self-made man, good friend, protective, caring, kind, only had one true love – Regina
* Regina: intelligent, made the best of her situation, kind, married to a good man though not a love-match, always had a fondness for Ash
* The friendships both main characters forged: Ash with Rex and then Rex’s story plus Regina’s friendship with Ariel from book one and some of the other women she became friends with
* That the evil people were, for the most part, thwarted
* The idea of the travel journals written by Ash and Rex and they way they came about – though I would have liked to have experienced a few of the events that made it into the book…as part of the story
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* At times I found my mind wandering and realized that I wanted more action and less telling of what was happening – especially in regard to what was happening during the sixteen years Ash and Regina were apart
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 4-5 Stars
     BLURB
Elijah was the man Regina could never forget. Now he is back in England, but someone wants to kill him. Regina Paddimore puts her dreams of love away with other girlish things when she weds her father’s friend to escape a vile suitor who tries to force a marriage. Sixteen years later, and two years a widow, she seeks a husband who might help her fulfil another dream—to have her own child. Elijah Ashby escapes his abusive step-family as soon as he comes of age, off to see the world. Letters from his childhood friend Regina are all that connects him to England. Sixteen years later, now a famous travel writer, the news she is a widow brings him home. Sparks fly between them when they meet again. Regina begins to hope for love as well as babies. Elijah will be happy just to have her at his side. However, Elijah’s stepbrothers are determined to do everything they can—lie, cheat, kidnap, even murder—so that one of them can marry Regina and take her wealth for themselves. Love and friendship must conquer hatred and spite before Elijah and Regina can be together. SEVEN COMFORT FILMS 📽
/ tagged by @simmingwiththetide ☼
01. harold and maude (1971)
director. hal ashby
starring. ruth gordon & bud cort
why i chose this movie. there’s no better film to watch if you’re feeling at the end of your rope. it’s funny, it’s colourful, it’s romantic, it’s sweet, it’s sorrowful. ruth gordon is, in my opinion, one of the best character actresses of all time and i could watch her do anything. bud cort comes across as so peculiar, so untouched by the world’s need to box people in that you want to shrink him and hide him away in your pocket. there’s no greater pairing. how anyone could watch this movie and not adore it is beyond me - and frankly i don’t want to know those people.
02. bringing up baby (1938)
director. howard hawks
starring. katharine hepburn & cary grant
why i chose this movie. it’s only the most hilarious thing ever committed to screen. you’ve got a paleontologist, a sociopath, a dog named george and a leopard called baby on a frolicking adventure round the connecticut countryside. there’s singing, there’s accidents, there’s cary grant in a see-through, feathery bathrobe. also, everything in this film is innuendo. cary’s character is called bones, he’s to marry a girl called miss swallow (who decidedly doesn’t) and besides looking for a lost leopard they are also looking for a bone that was located in a box. i’ve broken a rib laughing over this movie and i hope you do too. watch at your own risk!
03. everything is illuminated (2005)
director. liev schrieber
starring. eugene hutz & elijah wood
why i chose this movie. i only recommend this film for moments when your face is feeling soft. every minute of this film is a dream. it’ll take you by surprise with the places that you’ll go. you will shed tears but you will also feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for whatever life you’ve led. it’s also visually stunning. oh, those sunflowers!
04. the women (1939)
director. george cukor
starring. all i care about is rosalind russell & paulette goddard
why i chose this movie. there are no men in it. also, paulette goddard utters (with a twinkle in her eye), “where i spit, no grass grows EVER!” and if that isn’t the most sublime line in history i’ll drop dead on the spot.
05. margot at the wedding (2007)
director. noah baumbach
starring. jennifer jason leigh, jack black & nicole kidman
why i chose this movie. it makes me feel less bad about my general neurosis. i’m a mix of both the intensely cruel title character, margot, and her sister (who once joined a cult + drank someone’s bath water) and every single one of their scenes both haunt and vindicate me as a human being living in these dark times. i don’t recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have a very dry, very irreverent, very dark sense of humour.
06. the station agent (2003)
director. tom mccarthy
starring. peter dinklage, patricia clarkson & bobby canavale
why i chose this movie. i love found families. i love watching people who are struggling find other people who are struggling and build physical and emotional shelters together. it just makes me happy.
07. les triplettes de belleville (2003) or l'illusionniste (2010)
director. sylvain chomet
starring. oh, loads of people (mostly french)
why i chose this movie. the animation. the music. the surrealism. the little girl in me that wanted to believe these sorts of characters with their giant eyes, giant noses and lovely dispositions could actually exist. both these films are at any second incredibly quiet and unbearably loud and that chaos is what i need sometimes in order to escape.
honourable mentions.
submarine (2010, richard ayoade)
dan in real life (2007, peter hedges)
my neighbor totoro (1993, hayao miyazaki)
paddington (2015, paul king)
i served the king of england (2008, jiri menzel)
the suicide shop (2012, patrice leconte)
summertime (1955, david lean)
amelie (2001, jean-pierre jeunet)
i tag. @paupelou, @faaeish, @softerhaze, @wanderlustonline, @retro-pixels, @simshanti, @ i don’t know i don’t give a cuss just anyone bored enough to do it!!!

Carotid holds would now be banned under Colorado’s police accountability bill, which is nearing passage
more news https://northdenvernews.com
The wide-reaching Colorado police accountability bill nearing passage in the state legislature would ban officers from using controversial carotid pressure holds, which were central to the death last year of a 23-year-old man in Aurora after an encounter with law enforcement.
The ban on the maneuver, in which officers apply pressure to both sides of someone’s neck, cutting off blood flow, was added to Senate Bill 217 in an amendment made just before midnight on Wednesday as the measure advanced at the Capitol.
The Aurora and Lakewood police departments this week already announced they were outlawing the use of carotid pressure holds. Elijah McClain died in August after he was stopped by Aurora police officers, who used a carotid hold on him.
There were 13 total amendments made to the bill on Wednesday night, some of which add substantial new reporting and policy requirements for law enforcement agencies. The amendments would require:
Grand juries to issue a report when they decide not to indict an officer in a law enforcement-involved death
Prosecutors to notify the public if they are referring an investigation into a law enforcement-involved death to a grand jury
That families of those killed by law enforcement receive an advanced copy of any body camera footage of their loved one’s death before it is released to the public
Police to document and report every time officers unholster their weapons or fire them

Some of the changes made Wednesday night were around the use of body cameras, which the bill requires every law enforcement agency in the state to use. Among the alterations are mandates that officers notify crime victims they are being recorded and clarifying that jail guards, courtroom officers and the governor’s Colorado State Patrol detail do not need to wear the devices.
Law enforcement, under the bill, would now have 45 days to release body camera footage related to an ongoing investigation into a police officer’s actions, up from 30 days as was originally written in the measure.
Finally, officers would be required to test their body cameras at the beginning of the shift. If the devices don’t work after being checked, the bill now says, officers would not be held accountable if they malfunction during an incident.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies would have until September to train their officers on the changes proposed under the bill, though that timeframe could be extended.
Senate Bill 217 passed out of the House Finance Committee on Wednesday night by a 7-4, party line vote after hours of emotional testimony, including from the parents of people who were killed by police officers in Colorado.
Laura Sonia Rosales, whose 17-year-old daughter, Jessica, was fatally shot by Denver police in 2015, told lawmakers that a part of her heart died when her child was killed. Jessica, who was driving a stolen car, was unarmed and with several other children.
“My life is gone,” Sonia Rosales said in Spanish.

Viola Jacquez, whose 27-year-old son, Jack, was killed by a police officer in Rocky Ford in 2014, urged lawmakers to take action. Jack was unarmed and hadn’t committed a crime. The officer who killed him, James Ashby, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to a prison term.
“I feel for every mother out there that feels like me,” Viola said. “It doesn’t go away, even though they say it’s supposed to get better. It gets worse. The pain. The hurt.”
Senate Bill 217 will likely be heard on the House floor Thursday. More changes to the legislation are expected.
Republicans on the House Finance Committee said they support the goals of the measure, but have concerns about policy details they hope will be worked out in the coming days. GOP lawmakers in the Senate have already endorsed the bill.
Law enforcement organizations say they, too, support the bill, but would like to see changes before its passage.
The legislation also would allow police officers to be sued in their individual capacities, ban chokeholds and require vast data collection and reporting on race and use of force. It also would change the standard under which law enforcement can legally use deadly force.
MORE: Colorado’s sweeping police accountability bill now requires officers to face imminent threat before using deadly force
The Senate must approve the changes made in the House before the measure heads to Gov. Jared Polis’ desk. The governor says he supports the legislation.
The bill was brought by Democrats in response to the May 27 death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis. Floyd died after an officer kneeled on his neck for almost nine minutes in an encounter that was filmed and widely viewed. The death prompted protests across the nation, including in Denver.

My year in fiction.
As with previous years, this post was brought to you by Bibliocommons’ Completed Shelf. Fuck yeah opt-in datasets. Anything listed here you can take as a recommendation; I’ve skipped over everything I didn’t finish or found underwhelming.
Since I don’t think I can possibly finish The Mists of Avalon this year, even though I’ve been slogging through it for weeks, I guess I can do my year-end fiction review. Anything here is a recommendation; I got a lot better at DNFing things that weren’t so great.
I read some of the best books of my life this year. It was a banner year for historical fiction in particular, which, obviously, because I read Wolf Hall and Bringing Up The Bodies, finally. Those are, of course, the best books ever written, ever, but then I followed them up with a relatively unknown but incredibly good Hild by Nicola Griffith, who hasn’t done anything similar since, but it was a wonderful look at how superstition can make intelligence look like magic. I also started the year by finishing Hame, which I think I mentioned at the end of last year, but I’m mentioning it again as a perfect complement to the above books.
Tumblr media
I read The Lost Diaries of Susanna Moodie and thought they were quite a good reimagining. An Unquiet Grave was beautifully written and wonderfully researched.
I pretty much ended my kidlit reading this year, except a bunch of stuff for work, where I’m working on age-appropriate curriculum resources. The two in particular that I really enjoyed were The Midwife’s Apprentice and Elijah of Buxton.
In fantasy, I really enjoyed the vampiric-but-better qualities of Touch by Claire North, who I can’t wait to read more from. I also got on the Marie Brennan boat with A Natural History of Dragons, The Tropic of Serpents, and Voyage of the Basilisk.
In the realm of post-apocalypse, I read Dawn by Octavia Butler but tapped out early on in Adulthood Rites; the scenario was far too depressing given our current politics.
Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich didn’t rub me entirely the right way - it went a few places I wouldn’t have, with the premise, but it was an undeniably strong premise either way. It was a kind of contrast with Robopocalypse that actually made both books read better - the latter being a sort of rollicking old-school adventure told in vignettes so you don’t really get sick of any one character’s neuroses.
In somewhat-post-apoc, Company Town by Madeleine Ashby was both rollicking adventure and deeply unsettling Canadian critique.
Tumblr media
An Excess Male by Maggie Shen King seemed entirely too plausible.
The Marrow Thieves was perfect in every way.
I got The Book of the Unnamed Midwife and then immediately afterwards The Book of Etta and can’t wait for more. I loved the perspective of a medical professional whose first priority in a germ- or viral-based apocalypse is to grab as much birth control as humanly possible. It was definitely the year of contraception and fertility, including Red Clocks by Leni Zumas.
I read Annihilation, Acceptance, and Authority and thoroughly enjoyed them all. And then because plants attacking are cool, I finally read The Day Of The Triffids! And Man in the High Castle! I would love to see an adaptation that focuses more on the object-fetishism of American antiques.
I read The Gone-Away World, Nick Harkaway’s debut, and while it needs some paring-down it’s certainly a fun read. I read Amatka and I know I enjoyed it, but I can’t for the life of me remember anything in particular except I felt like there was a sequel coming and I should revisit it then.
Perhaps the farthest out-there I read was The Bees by Laline Paull. It was incredibly executed and so powerfully imaginative.
Tumblr media
I didn’t read much in the way of general, normal-people fic, but I read Bleaker House by Nell Stevens, a sort of embellished memoir about someone longing for seclusion and isolation, and The Animators, about artists with a very complex partnership. I really enjoyed Bandi’s The Accusation. I was extremely aggravated by Doppler by Erlend Loe, but in a good way. And so wonderfully charmed by A Man Called Ove. And quite melancholy at the end of Out Stealing Horses.
I also don’t read much horror, but The Vegetarian, Audition, and The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories all made the list this year.
By my count, that’s nine dude authors, vs. 23 female authors. And a lower Cancon than usual, but I think I hit some of the greats.

The Joshbys 2017: Family & Friend Nominees
I love this time of the year. Well, I love most everything of this time of the year — I love the time spent with family and friends along with the holidays. The whole Christmas thing is my favorite. Just don’t ask me to like the snow or The Christmas Shoes. Otherwise we won’t be friends.
One thing that I love about December is The Joshby Awards. This is something I’ve been doing for over a decade now. I started way back in 2005 as a way to just celebrate my family. Mainly as a way to let my siblings know who was my favorite of the bunch.
Then over the years it grew to a acknowledging friends as well. Then when I got into running some five years ago I started a running category to the awards. Then I have a “Miscellaneous Category” that is exactly what it is — miscellaneous. Everything from “Best Nachos” to “Ginger of the Year” to “Squad for the Apocalypse.” Just a lot of nonsensical fun.
Very nonsensical.
So when people ask me what exactly The Joshbys Awards are — I’m not sure how to exactly answer it?! They are what they are. And, it’s just something fun I’ve been doing for a while and nobody has told me to stop. Oh, there’s even a Facebook page for them. So, yeah … there you go.

This is all just a fun way to acknowledge and honor the people in my life. I feel extremely lucky and blessed to consider so many friends. And, I hope that I never take those friendships for granted.
Anyways — may the odds ever be in your favor.

Buncombe Co. NC Genealogies and Histories #northcarolinapioneers
Buncombe County Wills and Estates
Buncombe county was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford Counties. It was named for Edward Buncombe, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, who was captured at the Battle of Germantown. The large county originally extended to the Tennessee line. Many of the settlers were Baptists, and in 1807 the pastors of six churches including the revivalist Sion Blythe formed the French Broad Association of Baptist churches in the area. In 1808 the western part of Buncombe County became Haywood County. In 1833 parts of Burke County and Buncombe County were combined to form Yancey County, and in 1838 the southern part of what was left of Buncombe County became Henderson County. In 1851 parts of Buncombe County and Yancey County were combined to form Madison County. Finally, in 1925 the Broad River township of McDowell County was transferred to Buncombe County.
